On Labels

SPN Family: On Labels

Why do we feel the need to label people? According to Psychology Today it's "to resolve the impossible complexity of the environments we grapple to perceive." https://bit.ly/2OL7cxn So ... it's a shortcut. A way for us to understand the world without thinking too much about it.

But many labels hurt, or at the very least, do not encompass our whole being. Where it gets interesting is when the meaning or connotations of a label change. Those that enjoy the coupling of Dean and Castiel have long since announced their support for Destiel; a label for the pairing that has been confirmed in canon.

However, the “labels” for those that enjoy Destiel: “Hellers,” “Deathstiellers,” etc. has been given by those who dislike the ship, at minimum, and most times don’t like the character Castiel, if not Misha as well. It is used by these people to spread a negative connotation about the ship, even going so far as to say that those who like Misha/Castiel:

  1. Have run Jared/Jensen off of social media
  2. Don’t like Sam/Dean
  3. Want Sam “off the show”

Why do you think we label people? And where did these negative connotations come from?
