Supernatural interviews

Sarah Dugdale -- Wendy Hanscum

Meeting family members of your favourite characters is always a blast; and being introduced to Sheriff Donna Hanscum's niece, Wendy, is no different. From the beginning of episode 11 in Season 13, Breakdown, I loved Wendy's character. She is her own woman, but yet you could see the same fierce fighting spirit that Donna has. The actress, Sarah Dugale, played the part of Wendy perfectly. When I discovered that Sarah had been on Supernatural before (I love repeat guest stars!), back in Season 7, episode 18 (Party on Garth, she played Chloe), it totally made sense as to why Sarah seemed so comfortable in the role.

Are you familiar with the Wayward Sisters premise? If so, what do you think about the new potential spinoff?

Yes! I think its awesome. Such a cool story about unexpected family driven by strong female characters. I really think it has legs and it has the best fan-base already built in!

What special and unique quality did you bring to your character, Wendy Hanscum?

Even though we didn't get too much of a glimpse into her personality I tried to honour her as a whole character and not just as a damsel in distress. I believe that we are at the core of every character we play. I instantly related to her desire for adventure and her fight. I loved the details that were put into her character such as the earth conscious bumper stickers which I thought were a nuanced and effective touch.

You were also on Supernatural back in 2012 – were there any differences in between the two episodes?

I feel so fortunate to have been able to play two characters on Supernatural over the seasons. I was much younger in my first episode and pretty new to acting. This time around I have much more experience and training under my belt. Getting to play all of the stuff that Wendy goes through was a fun challenge. I don't think I would have been able to pull it off back in 2012.

What did you enjoy the most about being on Supernatural?

Doing some of my own stunts. While I’m certainly not a stunt actor I really love the challenge of shooting stunts and have great respect for stunt teams and their work. I grew up dancing so I love the choreography and intricacy of stunt sequences. The stunt co-ordinators and doubles on Supernatural are amazing. They really helped me sell it!

How did you prepare yourself for the role of Wendy?

The most work went into the scenes after the abduction. Finding the fear, hopelessness, and deteriorating health both physically and mentally.

Will we see more of your character?

I don't have any intel on that front but I would be more than happy to step back into Wendy's shoes and learn more about her. I feel like we've just seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of her personality and her relationship with Donna.

What was it like working with the cast?

Wonderful. The show has been around for so long that the cast and crew are truly like a family. They were all really welcoming.

Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to share?

A wonderful indie that I shot a couple years ago Hollow in The Land just got released on VOD. Check it out! The beauty about having an unpredictable career is that there's always something exciting just around the corner.
