Hate in the SPN fandom

I have been wracking my brain for the last week or so, trying to determine how to write this article in a way that would not, in turn, result in more hate on my timeline. I also wanted to address each comment, so that there truly is no bias. I will post two comments per day, in theorder that they were received. These will (hopefully) be posted a couple a day (I cannot promise every day, as life does get in the way), and there is a comment box, where I will add comments.

I want this to be a discussion piece. So straight out hate will not be posted.

Sept. 4 -- part 1

Just toxic people + fandom politics. I also think the way certain things are considered 'taboo' such as shipping, destiel, talking about race, gender, ability, sexuality ECT. on the show - not having a forum to bring to light and normalize a space for discussing these things helped bullying and tensions to grow in the fandom. Those tensions are so deeply rooted now. So now, when those topics are brought into the open - the toxicity brewing in the fandom comes with it. (I think these things should continue to be discussed in the open, toxicity grows in the dark). I mean, there are people in the fandom who cheer over ruining others happiness - it's a terrible atmosphere and not dragging it out and dealing with where it comes from has - over the years - made it so much worse. ust toxic people + fandom politics. Destiel shippers and Misha who constantly eggs them on. If you look at the hate towards Jared it’s all from people with Misha icons and/or a variation of the name Misha, Cass or Destiel. They want Jared gone.

Sept. 3 -- part 5

There is hatred also in other Fandom. Sometimes people are stupid and without respect for others. Obviously, there may also be cases in which the person has psychological ... mental problems ... and in this case they are people with illnessesThere is hatred also in other Fandom. I think some fans want the show to be something it’s not and feel entitled to try to force it.Also these same fans hate Sam/Jared for getting in the way of Cas/Mishas relationship with Dean/Jensen. If people would just accept things the way they are, things would be a lot better.

Comments

Every fandom is a product of the internet, with all its exposure, flamewars, hubris, over-investment and meanness born of hiding behind a screen. SPN is no different, no matter who blames whom. It's not going to change. Best you can do is not tolerate it on your site.

Sept. 4, 2018 -- part 4

"I think maybe it's the access the cast and crew give through the internet. It makes some people feel like they own the show."

"Every fandom has a toxic side but apparently most people shit on other spn fans for liking a certain character. I've witness the spn fandom tear down an artist and f*** up her career so bad that she can't get any work without being threatened ( all because certain actors liked/shared her art ) All the toxicity of the ideal of being a #1 fan and attacking someone that they deemed not a big fan. Trying to get the actors attention and will attack about anyone that gets any attention from an actor ( even go so far to claim that a person hogging the spotlight)"

Comments (both anonymous)

The hate in this fandom comes from all sides. It comes from people who feel the cast and TPTB own them something and act like they own the show; comes from extreme shippers (both destiel and wincest) which they feel entitled to push their ships on the show, on the cast, on the TPTB and on the fandom to the point of hating the actors and their families and sending threats to other fans (I was threatened before by both extreme destiel and wincest shippers); it comes from people who feel entitled to order the cast around about what they can or can't say and how should they say it and that send hate and threats against them over jokes made at conventions; comes from people who act like fandom police/gatekeeper and send their followers to harass everyone who disagree with their hateful speeches against the cast; it comes from people who manipulate data to fit their agenda and from people who think is cool to doxx other fans and the actors. Come on, those people already drove away Jared from SM for a second time due to constant harassment against him. And I have the feeling those negative people won't rest until they drive away the cast from SM.

"Some of us watch Supernatural primarily for the brothers, we should be allowed to do so, but these people don’t let us. I’ve never seen a fandom be so vitriolic towards fans of the lead characters." *

* Note: this comment had more, but it included negativity toward a specific person -- this is something I will not be posting.

Sept. 4, 2018 -- part 3

Original question: Why do you think there is so much hate in the SPN fandom?

"Ships. Ships are the rotten apples of this gorgeous pie."

"Because of extreme fans, more on the bronly side, some not on the bronly side."

Comments: (Note, I'm sure the following comments aren't all pertaining to the above, but wanted to ensure everyone sees the new content first.)

"I think some people just thrive on hate. If they have all good they feel internally whether they realize it or not they have the need to sabotage. Whether its others it's against others or self sabotage. So shipping may be a part of it but its certainly not the only part. It's such a small part of this unfortunate picture." ~ @brandiniBee

"Just wanted to address 2 things from the comments here. 1. "Ships are the rotten apples of this gorgeous pie." This is one thing that bothers me, that we cannot discuss fandom problems without shipping itself getting blamed as a rotten apple? Shipping is an act of love. It's about love of two characters and of a relationship. It's not inherently conflict or wank-causing, and plenty of fandom problems and conflicts come as much from extremities of behavior from fans of one character. 2. "Jared knows there's a hateful group that is trying to get him kicked off the show." I'm aware of the Jared hate and don't condone it but can people please stop spreading this false information? Hate is hate but this has become a false talking point and it's not productive to discussion. The false rumors about the nature of the Jared hate is used to bash and generalize and hate on other fandom groups. Jared, Jensen, and Misha all get hate. All 3 are also loved and supported by majority of the fandom, of all sides...majority of all the sides doesn't want any of them gone from SPN." ~ @Dottweets

"it’s NOT a shipping issue. this goes WAY past it. if that was an issue pure and simple, there wouldn’t be multishippers that tfw fans/non-shippers/destiel shippers were friends with. if this was purely about shipping, there would be way more division than what there is. no, this is about people being extreme. they want to comment and hate the actors because of their personal relationships, they want to ignore said personal relationships, they kick and scream over the show not being what it once was, that certain characters deserve a better family. to oversimplify the complex issue by calling it a ship war doesn’t help us to get to the root of it and talk about it. i wasn’t around for seasons 1-3, but “fandom vets” and articles from around then show that this has always been a problem. it didn’t just materialize out of thin air when season 4 started." ~ @CasGirlSam

"I agree with many here who say no matter what J2 say to try and show their love and friendship for Misha, haters will refuse to accept it because it conflicts with their own version of the truth. If they accept J2's words, then that means their own beliefs are wrong. Their fantasies are wrong. They want to live in fantasy, not reality. They run from reality." @BryDeborah

Sept. 4, 2018 -- part 2

Original question: Why do you think there is so much hate in the SPN fandom?

"Division amongst stans and shippers"

"Idk. I find it odd."

Sept. 3, 2018 -- part 1

Original question: Why do you think there is so much hate in the SPN fandom?

People have difficulty dealing with conflicting opinions and/or feelings. Many people project onto characters, stan
them, or hate them. There’s also a pre-existing exclusivity among fans—the belief that in order to be a True Fan,
they must follow a particular regiment of thought.

Because the people that could actually try and put a stop to it, and by that I mean J2, wont speak up about it.

Comments:

"j2 can’t stop the hate. it isn’t fair to them to put that on them when nothing has worked. they’ve showed how much love they have for misha and their wives EXPLICITLY CLEAR and all it does is make it WORSE." @CasgirlSam

"I feel the last statement touches on one of the biggest reasons. For years silence from nearly all powers that be, not simply j2, led to haters feeling they had a free pass; they believed the silence meant the ptb agreed with their viewpoint. (So, they hated with a vengeance because they felt they were being seen as the true fans.) Whether the silence was due to fear of alienating these fans or not wanting conflict between the ptb and fans, it exacerbated the problem and now it is out of control. Fortunately, the tide has started turning with j2 and the other ptb now beginning to make it quite clear hate against anyone will not be tolerated and it is the haters who are the outsiders."  ~ @BryDeborah

"I'm very new to the fandom & this the only fandom I've come close to joining. I'd like to think that gives me some objectivity to my answer. Why is there so much hate in the fandom? It's not a simple answer, nor does it have a single answer. I can see & mostly agree w/ the comments above. Where I differ is this: people, in general, don't take responsibility for themselves or their words & actions. Hateful people would rather blame everyone else for whatever they see is "wrong." By blaming others, we (as individuals) are giving away our personal power. But the mentality of some is that their "rightness" puts them above everyone else. That kind of thinking is fallacious, even if hate is not involved. There's also the fact that SPN tends to draw in people who have mental illnesses. I believe this is a very large contributing factor. Struggling w/ mental illnesses is hard enough; add in being super passionate & instability, that's a recipe for disaster. Instead of channeling our depression, anxiety, and the host of other issues brought into the fandom, in positive, supportive & helpful ways, the hateful are overcome by their issues. In summary: "From the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." @DarklyCheerful

" No J2 are not to blame. Stop putting it on them. You know what's to blame? Fandom culture of silence. For years at the beginnings of fandom we were told not to say anything about the hate. To let it go. Be quiet. And that just embolden those doing the hating because they got to spew their vitriol without consequence. Blaming J2 is ridiculous. They are not to blame for what their fans do. They have said how much they love their wives, children, Misha, their coworkers time and time again and their toxic fans ignore it or come up with ridiculous excuses like PR and ignore it. The toxic fans are delusion and nothing J2 can say or do will change that delusion. Stop blaming J2 for what other people do. No one can control another person's actions." ~ @chaoticbeauty26

"It's strange to blame J2 when there's a ton of hate directed at J2, especially Jared. Jared knows there's a hateful group that is trying to get him kicked off the show. They've never publicly addressed or responded to that group either." ~ A fan of all the actors (yeah, all of them)
